12 CORE Principles for Healthy Building Design
CORE Principle 03
Healthy Building Materials & Finish Systems
Healthy materials require more consideration than simply choosing products labeled “green,” “natural,” or “zero VOC.”
SENERGY360 evaluates materials based on their chemistry, emissions, moisture behavior, durability, cleanability, installation requirements, and compatibility with the overall building assembly.
The goal is to reduce unnecessary chemical exposure without compromising building performance.

SENERGY360 helps guide:
- Structural and enclosure materials
- Insulation
- Interior wall systems
- Flooring
- Cabinetry and millwork
- Countertops
- Paints and coatings
- Adhesives and sealants
- Waterproofing materials
- Finish systems
Material review may consider:
- VOCs
- Formaldehyde
- PFAS
- Flame retardants
- Plasticizers
- Fragrances
- Other chemicals of concern
Natural and mineral-based materials may be preferred where appropriate, but natural appearance alone does not make a material healthy.
Materials must work for both the occupants and the building.
One of 12: Healthy Building Materials & Finish Systems
Every principle is stronger when the other eleven are in the room.
SENERGY360 coordinates all twelve from early design through final verification.
